Saxilby Lincoln Indian Sandstone Patio Clean for Slip Risk Restoring Colour & Safer underfoot

This customer got in touch after one of their small children slipped on the patio, which had become extremely green and slippery due to heavy algae build-up. The patio was Indian sandstone, and because the property sits close to the countryside with the garden backing onto open fields, the area had very little shelter from the elements. With constant exposure to rain, wind and organic debris, the surface had quickly developed a slick film and looked tired and discoloured.

The issue

Indian sandstone is a beautiful surface, but it can become hazardous when algae takes hold — especially in damp and shaded conditions. In this case, the main concerns were:

  • A very slippery surface creating a risk for children playing outside

  • Heavy green algae staining across the stone

  • General weathering from constant exposure to open countryside conditions

The customer’s priority was simple: make the patio safer and more usable again, while improving the appearance at the same time.

Site visit and plan

We assessed the patio and agreed the best approach to lift the algae and grime safely, without harsh, unnecessary abrasion to the stone. The plan was to:

  • Carry out a full clean of the Indian sandstone

  • Focus on removing the green algae film responsible for the slip hazard

  • Restore the natural colour and finish as evenly as possible across the area

How we treated the driveway

1) Full patio clean with focus on algae removal
We cleaned the sandstone using professional equipment, paying special attention to:

  • The heaviest green sections where algae had built up

  • High-use areas where children were walking and playing

  • Joints and edges where grime and organic growth collect

This lifted the slick surface film and restored a much cleaner, grippier finish underfoot.

2) Even finish and colour restoration
As the surface cleaned up, the sandstone began to brighten considerably, allowing the natural tones and variations to show again. Indian sandstone is one of those surfaces that responds incredibly well to professional cleaning, and once the build-up is removed the vibrant colours can really come through.

The result

The transformation was clear, the patio was left far cleaner, brighter and significantly safer underfoot, with the green algae removed and the stone colour restored. Most importantly, the customer felt confident that the children could enjoy the outdoor space again with a greatly reduced risk of slips.
